WITCHHALSE; An old English name for Hazel (Corylus avellana) in Cornwall. Other interesting 'extinct' names include 'Cobbedy-Cut', also from Cornwall, and 'Woodnut' from Yorkshire.
I started my career in Landscape Conservation in Cornwall, whilst studying for a BSc in Conservation Biology and Ecology, so I thought it appropriate to make use of an old west country name for the species I most often work with.
Initially I specialised in coppice products made from Hazel; hurdles, woven fences and hedge laying materials. Since this time I have branched out into other species, including Ash, Birch, Oak and for a time Sweet Chestnut (whilst living and working in the SE of England).
One element of my work remains consistent; coppice products are always made with materials cut from sustainably managed woodlands. Mainly from woodlands managed by conservation charities whose main aim is to maintain high quality habitats for the benefit of wildlife.
Through Witch Halse Coppice Crafts I'm able to supply traditional coppice products, deliver high quality habitat management / creation works and teach others the skills required to create things from trees.
Landscape based services I offer include:
- Hedge laying
- Coppicing
- Meadow management through the use of scythes
- Tree planting
- Volunteer task leadership
If you're interested in coppicing or any other element of my work and would like to have a go, get in touch. I'm interested on taking on volunteers to work with me, in exchange you'll be able to gain experience and knowledge about traditional coppice crafts.
If you manage a woodland that needs coppicing or a hedge that needs laying please get in touch:
